West Feliciana Parish Highlights April– June 2019

Family & Consumer Sciences

Two nutrition sessions were delivered to the Council on Aging (COA) using Eat Smart, Live Strong curriculum reaching 41 citizens.18 COA participants attended the MyPlate Program. Each program included a food demo and tasting component. A Fruit & Vegetable Program was delivered for Adult Ed students and staff of The Family Service Center reaching 6. A Physical Activity Program was delivered to all kindergarten and first graders at Bains Lower Elementary reaching 325 youth.Kindergarten and first grade students participated in Watermelon Relays with melons provided by the Feliciana Master Gardeners. All 350 students were provided with a taste. Hosted nutrition booth reaching approximately 50 at West Feliciana Color Dash. Participants answered fruit and vegetable questions with clues from the prize wheel. Youth also peddled the smoothie bike preparing and sampling fruit smoothies.Three round robin stations about the Fruit Group were conducted at 4-H Awards & Activities Day reaching 80 4th and 5th graders. All the 4-H’ers were able to “rock” the bike and blend fruit smoothies. Delivered programs on Rethink Your Drink and Eating Out to 67 youth participating in the West Feliciana Parks & Rec Summer Camp. Youth rode the smoothie bike to make fresh fruit smoothies and prepared Pasta Picnic Salad. To help the library celebrate “A Universe of Stories”, a program on Space Food was delivered to 60. The participants prepared space burritos.

4-H Youth Development

4-H Club meetings wrapped up for the year with a Louisiana Black Bear educational program.17 4-H’ers participated in the Regional Culinary Arts Contest in Ponchatoula. 80 4th and 5th grade 4-H’ers took part in Awards & Activities Day. They participated in educational stations and received awards for project book completion. 21 4-H’ers attended 4-H Day at the Capitol where they met with one of their representatives and learned about the legislative process.8th -12th grade 4-H’ers had the opportunity to participate in 4-H University at LSU. Six took part in Clover College and 17 competed in contests with eight earning medals: Dog & Cat Science- Ashleigh Godke, Compact Tractor-Quentin Scott, Fishing Sports-Jacob Owens, Diesel Operations-Owen Brouillette, LA Chef- Elaina Singleton, Diesel Operations State Winner- Kam Noble who won the Tennessee Educational Trip, Casual Wear Fashion Review State Winner- Jon Elise Sturgeon who won a sewing machine, and Wildlife Habitat Judging 3rd Place -Anna Bergeron who earned her way onto the state team. She will participate in the national competition in Kansas City. Six 4-H’ers competed at the District Horse Show in a variety events from showmanship, performance events to speed events. All six qualified to participate in the State 4-H Horse Show.

Horticulture/ Ag & Natural Resources

The Feliciana Master Gardeners hosted a wonderful Spring Garden Tour on April 27th. Five beautiful gardens around St. Francisville were on tour and the weather was perfect for the occasion. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to 4-H scholarships and school gardens at West Feliciana schools. The Master Gardeners also participated in the West Feliciana Parish Library celebration of the moon landing by conducting a presentation on moon gardens. School gardens at Bains Elementary wrapped up with the 2nd graders harvesting quash, cucumber, potatoes, and tomatoes.
