Springtime is a great time to commit to healthier living. One way to do that is to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. In recent years, farmers’ markets have become an increasingly popular choice for seeking local produce.
Northeast Louisiana has followed that trend. At present, every parish in northeast Louisiana offers at least one farmer-owned market area. The LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture websites offer links to these farmers’ markets.
In addition, many farmers market vendors are equipped to accept government benefits to extend the food buying dollar. WIC, SNAP, and senior benefits are becoming increasingly accepted. If you are a vendor, contact Cecilia Stevens at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 318-435-2903 for information on how to become certified to accept benefits.
Buying what is in season is another key to maximizing farmers markets. April is prime time for Louisiana strawberries, spring greens, and early peas. All of these offer excellent healthy eating benefits and help to support Louisiana farmers.
Shop smart and healthy by visiting Louisiana farmers markets.
