Research Associate Specialist (SPESS) - East Baton Rouge - R00061942

(This is a non-tenure track position funded by revenues generated by the Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

Work Location: Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab, School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences (STPAL), LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA

Responsibilities: This position is a full-time, 12-month, Research Associate position in the School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences. The incumbent will work in the STPAL in Sturgis Hall under the direct supervision of the Director of STPAL (currently Michael Breithaupt). The Research Associate performs a wide variety of tasks related to soil and plant analysis, with some of the functions requiring knowledge of sophisticated instrumentation and software and familiarity with soil science. Duties include:

  • Entering samples into database
  • Preparing, extracting, digesting, washing and testing samples on various instruments
  • Answering the phone
  • Helping customers in person
  • Making extractions for testing samples.
  • Understanding ICAP, LECO, and Lab Management software and maintenance if needed.
  • Making standards for ICAP
  • Calling problem samples (incorrect payment or wrong ID’s)
  • Supervision of student workers
  • Pick up soil kits from post office.
  • Any other jobs needed.

Qualification Requirements: A BS degree in soil science, crop science, agronomy, horticulture, or related field is required. An MS degree and coursework in soil science is preferred. Prior experience with soil or plant testing procedures or advanced instrumentation and software interfaces is desirable.
