Our Annual Ascension 4-H Sweet Potato & Bergeron’s Peeled Pecan halves fundraiser pickups are here in time for the holidays! Pickups are at the 4-H Office on Nov. 14th & 15th between 8:00 am and 5 pm. Orders not picked up after the 15th will be resold- we do not want the products in our office for the holiday! If you have any questions or need to make special arrangements for pickups, please call the 4-H Extension Office!
November is the month of giving! Pledge your Hands to Larger Service by helping in one of two ways!
1. Donate to a Canned Food or Non-perishable Items Drive. See your club leader to organize something OR help with an already existing drive at your school!
2. Sock It To Me- Give a new pair of socks to provide an infant, child or adult this holiday season. Our office and several schools will be collection sites through December 6th.This drive is through Family Resource Group and Baton Rouge Parents Magazine. Donations will be made locally! Commit to helping your neighbors!
November and December bring several different contest opportunities! The decorated cookie contest and the 4-H poster Contents! Ask your club leaders for rules and deadlines for both! After competing at school, your posters can also be submitted to the Demo Day Competition on January 12th! The Demo Day poster rules are posted on at www.lsuagcenter.com/ascension4h under Contests>Demo Day. More detailed info on Demo Day to come next month!
Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! The first 10 students to receive BINGO by December 16 will receive a prize. We have ONE slot left! We are super excited to get our second cookery contest kicked off with the Poultry Cookery! Be mindful all contests have had adjustments made so read the guidelines carefully! For each of our monthly contest entries, you will need to submit 2 copies of your recipe and 1-2 servings of your dish in a disposable container. You can earn extra points by submitting pictures of the before (ingredients), during preparation (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish and a short summary about your experience of cooking the dish. All of these extra components can be emailed to Mrs. Stephanie. The drop off day for completed dishes are from 8 am to 5:30pm on the date listed. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. More detailed guidelines and explanations will be available soon on our website at lsuagcenter.com/ascension4-H! POULTRY- November 27th and SUGAR- December 11 (just two weeks later).

All 5th-12th graders interested in fashion, may want to attend the LA State 4-H Fashion Day Camp Experience- “Fashion & Beyond on Tour” to be held January 9, 2024 at the LSU Mini Farm. We will bring Fashion to YOUR fingertips! This camp is put on by the Louisiana State Fashion Leadership Board members. The 4-H Fashion Board would like to invite you to come experience the "new" Fashion & Beyond On Tour. You will get a closer look at all aspects of the fashion world, from newspaper runways, color wheels, upcycling, fibers, to basic sewing fundamentals. You will engage in multiple sessions of activities planned by the fabulous fashion board. *Limit 50 per location on a first-come-first-served basis. Transportation is not provided. For more information, please contact the office. Registration will open in 4-H Online on December 1st.
Looking for a way to make a difference? Become a 4-H Volunteer! Volunteers are the heart of the Ascension Parish 4-H program. There are many roles and positions that provide important functions to help make 4-H programming successful on the school and parish levels. Individuals can volunteer to serve project leaders, provide transportation to 4-H events, assist with the parish or school 4-H programs, help with event setup/take down, clerical work, contest judges, and more. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please call the 4-H office. As a volunteer, you are supported by the insurance carried by LSU AgCenter for AgCenter events. You can enroll as a volunteer through the 4-H Online system mentioned previously in the newsletter.
Enjoy a fun filled night with the New Orleans Pelicans and 4-H on January 19th! The Pelicans will be playing the Suns and tip off will be at 7:00pm. All tickets for this 4-H game need to be purchased by December 9th. Tickets and parking passes can be purchased on an individual basis or as a group order. Last year was the first year of changes to the State record book competition, so our Ascension Parish records competition has been updated to reflect the changes. As you continue through the year, it’s important to keep track of all your activities and accomplishments to make submitting your record book easier in the spring. The Record Book Document can be found at https://tinyurl.com/4hRBook . This new document must be used for the parish and state record book competitions!
This year, we hosted an enrollment contest. All members who properly registered for Ascension 4-H from the enrollment opening September 1st through the October 16th contest deadline were entered for a chance to win a gift card or 4-H swag. Winners were pulled through an online random number generator and will receive their prize at their 4-H club meetings.

The Shooting Camp will be held December 8-10, 2023 at the Grant Walker Educational Facility. The camp is open to 4-H Youth ages 9-13 years old. Participants will choose one of the following: Archery, Shotgun, .22 Rifle or Air Rifle/Air Pistol/BB (Combined). Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend but it is not mandatory. The cost will be $120 per youth/per adult which will cover registration, lodging, meals and t-shirt. All youth will be required to bring their own bow/firearm and arrows/ammo. LSU AgCenter policy requires all adults attending an overnight event with youth have to complete our overnight chaperone training and screening process.
