Sweet Potato & Peeled Pecan

Halves Pecan Fundraiser

Just in time for the Holidays, we are having our Annual Ascension 4-H Sweet Potato & Bergeron’s Peeled Pecan halves fundraiser. These Louisiana freshly, grown products will be available for preorder now through October 21st. Orders can be placed online, turned into your club leader or submitted at the 4-H Extension office using the attached order form. We are offering a 20-pound sweet potato INSTEAD of a 10-pound again this year, along with the normal 40-pound sweet potato and 3 pound of peeled pecan halves. Sweet potatoes are Beauregard and/or Orleans varieties. The ordered sweet potatoes and pecans will be available for pick up at the 4-H Office on Nov. 19th & 20th. It is the responsibility of the 4-H member’s family who sold the products to be sure their orders are distributed. Orders can be picked up between 8:00 am and 5 pm. Orders NOT picked up after the 20th will be resold! We cannot hold onto any product during the Thanksgiving break. This fundraiser benefits the Ascension 4-H Foundation and provides money for educational programs, awards, workshops, scholarships, and events. If you have any questions or need to make special arrangements for pickups, please call the 4-H Extension Office!

Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign

Fall Paper Clover in all Tractor Supply Co stores & online with a purchase from 10/2/2024 - 10/13/2024. You may see some of our 4-H members in the stores assisting. Please don’t forget to donate at checkout! Money raised from paper clover sales goes directly to our program to assist with camp scholarships and programming.


National 4-H Week

National 4-H Week will take place October 6-12. Join in the fun by helping to spread 4-H awareness and encouraging your friends to join! 4-H provides opportunities for community development, friendships, citizenship, and developing leaders! We challenge each 4-H member to take advantage of the opportunities in their community by participating in 1-2 hours of service during 4-H week. Please share service stories with us- email a brief description and pictures to cbrady@agcenter.lsu.edu. Check social media for daily trivia, videos, stories, and challenges throughout the week!

Clubs can participate in the 4-H Week Display Contest! Decorate a shadow box, hallway, bulletin board, school entrance, office, or whatever school administration will allow you to! Registration is open until October 1. All displays will be judged toward the end of 4-H Week during October 6-12. Registered participants will receive communication from the 4-H office as to exactly when judging will take place!


CLUB CONTESTS!

Help your club to WIN by participating in different events! We will have two AWARDS that will continue this year! These clubs will be recognized at Achievement Day and will receive a party at the end of this school year!
1. Club Sweepstakes Award- The club with the highest percentage of members participating in parish activities.

2. Highest Increase in Enrollment- The club with the largest membership increase for the year.


Spark | Action | Change Summit- 7th-8th Graders

Louisiana 4-H is excited to announce the inaugural Spark ▪ Action ▪ Change |Summit, an immersive 3-day event designed to engage and inspire 7th and 8th grade 4-H youth with a keen interest in government relations, volunteering/service, and personal development. This summit aims to provide a dynamic and interactive learning environment where participants can deepen their understanding of civic engagement, refine their leadership skills, and develop a strong sense of social responsibility. Through a series of hands-on educational workshops, engaging tours, and collaborative service projects, youth will have the opportunity to explore critical aspects of civic education, public service, and personal growth. The event will take place February 20-22, 2025 at the Lod Cook Conference Center, LSU Baton Rouge. Cost: $125 per participant.

Registration on 4-H Online will be open with a 2-per parish limit beginning September 16, 2024, through October 31, 2024.


State Shooting Sports Camp

The Shooting Camp will be held December 6-8, 2024 at the Grant Walker Educational Facility. The camp is open to 4-H Youth ages 9-13 years old. Participants will choose one of the following: Archery, Shotgun, .22 Rifle or Air Rifle/Air Pistol/BB (Combined). Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend but it is not mandatory. The cost will be $130 per youth/per adult which will cover registration, lodging, meals and t-shirt. All youth will be required to bring their own bow/firearm and arrows/ammo. LSU AgCenter policy requires all adults attending an overnight event with youth have to complete our overnight chaperone training and screening process.

Deadline to register for this camp in 4-H Online is November 18. Contact our office for more information.


ATV Safety Workshop

Need something to do during fall break? Registration is now open for an ASI ATV training that will take place on November 25th at Lamar Dixon. This training is open to Ascension 4-H members 11 years and up. Participants will learn the ins and outs of safely operating an ATV, gain hands-on practice while operating an ATV, complete the online E Course module, and get to take home their own helmet for future ATV operation! The E-Course must be completed prior to the day of the training to become a certified safe rider. Limited Space is available. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. There is a $10.00 registration fee to hold your spot! For more information, please contact our office at 621-5799 and scan the QR code in the flier to register.


LSU 4-H & FFA Bayou Bash

Hey, Fighting Tiger Fans! Join us for the LA 4-H, FFA, & LSU COA Bayou Bash Tiger Tailgate and watch the Tigers take on Vanderbilt. The event will take place on Saturday, November 23. Limited seating and pre-tailgate registration is required. Visit our website under “Events” for the registration link, shirt sales, ticket orders, and details. Scan the QR codes in the fliers for registration sites.


Cookery Contest- Egg

We are super excited to get our cookery contest kicked off again this year with the Egg Cookery! For each of our monthly contest entries, you will need to submit 2 copies of your recipe and 1-2 servings of your dish in a disposable container. You can earn extra points by submitting pictures of the before (ingredients), during preparation (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish and a short summary about your experience of cooking the dish. All of these extra components can be emailed to Mrs. Sarah. The drop off day for your completed dish is on October 21 from 8 am to 5:30pm. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. More detailed guidelines and explanations are posted on our website at lsuagcenter.com/ascension4-H!


Challenge Camp- “Dare to Lead”

Are you up for the Challenge of making new friends, working as a team, growing as a leader, and accomplishing a goal? If so, you may enjoy the Southeast Regional Challenge Camp for 7th & 8th Grade members. Challenge Camp one night at Lion King Retreat Center from October 28-29. Registration is through 4-H Online and the deadline is October 4th.There is a $30 fee that includes a shirt, transportation, meals, and all activities. At camp this year, there will be a costume contest (cheery, not eerie) and talent show!

Limited spots are available on a first-some-first-serve basis. Priority is given to 7th graders.


Become a 4-H Volunteer

Looking for a way to make a difference? Become a 4-H Volunteer! Volunteers are the heart of the Ascension Parish 4-H program. There are many roles and positions that provide important functions to help make 4-H programming successful on the school and parish levels. Individuals can volunteer to serve project leaders, provide transportation to 4-H events, assist with the parish or school 4-H programs, help with event setup/take down, clerical work, contest judges, and more. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please call the 4-H office. As a volunteer, you are supported by the insurance carried by LSU AgCenter for AgCenter events. You can enroll as a volunteer through the 4-H Online system mentioned previously in the newsletter.

A few notes when registering…

School Club, Community Club, & Members at Large- Please select your club name or member-at-large if you are joining through the parish. State and Parish 4-H Dues will be paid through the 4-H Online Enrollment site. School Club fees (if apply) will be paid through your child’s school.


PROJECT RESOURCES will NOT be selected through the 4-H Online Enrollment site.

~ All 4th and 5th Graders will receive the Discovering the World of 4-H or Exploring the World of 4-H Project Books. NO Ordering is necessary. These will be delivered to club meetings around November. |

~2nd year 5th grade members and 6th-12th

graders should place an order for a project resource if they are interested. All orders must be received by October 16th in order to be delivered to November Club meetings. Members are eligible to receive 1 project resource at no charge.


Decorated Pumpkin Contest and Pet Show

Come have a spooktacular time at the Ascension 4-H Pet Show & Pumpkin Contest on Tuesday, October 22, 6 pm, Lamar Dixon Barns7/8. To participate in the pet show, pets must be up to date on vaccinations, in a cage, or restrained! The cost is $2.00 to participate in the pet show. Only one pet per 4-Her. There will be a cheery, not eerie costume contest (for people and pets), tricks for treats, and many other categories for your pets to be judged! You can bring and enter your decorated pumpkins in the following categories for judging: Carved, 4- H Spirit, Character, Prettiest, or Any Other! Concessions will be sold. Bring a donation for CARA’s House a service project! (Items such as newspaper, dog food, cat food, blankets, and other pet care items.)


Project Club information!

Home & Style Project Club

The Home & Style Club will include cooking and sewing this year! Each month a cooking project will be completed in coordination with the cookery contests. The club is open to all Ascension 4-H’ers, meets on the 3rd Thursday monthly (except October) and its membership fee is $10.00 to join. This helps to pay for supplies used for project materials. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 10, 6 pm at the 4-H Office. Scan the QR code to register for the Home & Style project club.


Wiggles & Wags Project Club

Wiggles & Wags is a project club that focuses on everything DOG! It helps members learn more about caring for, training, and working with their beloved canines all while doing service and growing in leadership. The Wiggles & Wags project club is open to all Ascension 4-H members and meets on the 2nd Tuesday monthly. The membership fee is $10.00 to join for the year. The next meeting will be at 6 pm, Tuesday, October 8 at the 4-H Office. Scan the QR code to register for Wiggles & Wags.


Jr. Leader Project Club- 7th - 12th Grades

The Ascension 4-H Jr. Leader Project Club is open to all 7th-12th grade Ascension 4-H members. Jr. Leaders focus on leadership, citizenship, and teamwork. The service-learning theme chosen by the members will be related to animals. The cost to join the Jr. Leader Club is $10.00. The second meeting of the year will take place October 16th, at 6 pm at the office! To Sign up for Jr. Leaders scan the QR code.


Livestock News

If you are planning to participate in the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows and have not contacted the Ascension Parish Office to let them know your intentions of showing, please do so ASAP as important forms and information will be sent out to livestock exhibitors very soon.

Important Livestock Dates:

  • October 13- Livestock Family Day & Clinics- Mandatory for livestock exhibitors
  • October 15- Deadline to contact the office to express intent to show
  • November 11- Possession deadline and market/commercial validations due for beef, dairy, sheep, exhibition poultry & goat
  • November 18- Mini Beef possession deadline
  • November 22- Possession Deadline and market/commercial validations due for swine
  • November 22- Entry Forms and Fees due for rabbits, poultry, sheep, swine, goats, beef, & dairy
