14 honored at State 4-H Commodity Ambassador Contest

Fourteen 4-H students were winners in the State 4-H Commodity Ambassador Contest on April 19 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. In all, 71 4-H’ers from across the state competed in the chicken, egg, seafood, sugar and turkey contests.

The 4-H Commodity Ambassador Program is designed for education and enhancement of 4-H Club members, according to Theresia Lavergne, LSU AgCenter poultry specialist. The program provides an opportunity for 4-H’ers to increase their knowledge of agricultural commodities and improve communication skills.

The 2011 state winners are:

Chicken Ambassador

Division I (4th to 6th graders) – Bret Lee, Vermilion Parish

Division II (7th to 9th graders) – Connor Waits, Vermilion Parish

Division III (10th to 12th graders) – Benton Troxclair, Lafourche Parish

Egg Ambassador

Division I (4th to 6th graders) – Brynna Robert, Jefferson Parish

Division II (7th to 9th graders) – Hailey Rodrigue, Terrebonne Parish

Division III (10th to 12th graders) – Shawn Fox, Ascension Parish

Seafood Ambassador

Division I (4th to 6th graders) – Gaven Guidry, Terrebonne Parish

Division II (7th to 9th graders) – Austin Gaspard, Vermilion Parish

Division III (10th to 12th graders) – Leah Broussard, Vermilion Parish

Sugar Ambassador

Division I (4th to 6th graders) – Breanna Sconza, Jefferson Parish

Division II (7th to 9th graders) – Caroline Cruse, Lafourche Parish

Division III (10th to 12th graders) – Chelsie Luquette, Vermilion Parish

Turkey Ambassador

Division I (4th to 6th graders) – Jake Rollins, Caldwell Parish

Division II (7th to 9th graders) – Courtney Troxclair, Lafourche Parish

Division III (10th to 12th graders) – Benton Troxclair, Lafourche Parish

The winners in Divisions I and II of the Chicken, Egg, Seafood, and Turkey Ambassador contests won a $100 savings bond.

The winners in Division III of the Chicken, Egg, and Turkey Ambassador contests won a trip to represent Louisiana at the National 4-H Poultry & Egg Conference in Louisville, Ky., in November.

The winners in Division III of the Seafood and Sugar Ambassador Contests won the 4-H Education Trip to Orlando, Fla., in July.

The sponsors of the 4-H Commodity Ambassador Programs are the Louisiana Poultry Federation, the Louisiana Egg Commission, the Louisiana Seafood and Marketing Board and the American Society of Sugarcane Technologists.
