Southern University and LSU AgCenter Participate in Health Fair

Staff from Southern University and LSU AgCenter participated in the first health fair sponsored by Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church on September 12, 2010. The theme of the event, Spiritually Healthy, had the support of many health organizations. Doctors and nurses from Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence, Louisiana; Southeast Medical Center in Greensburg, Louisiana; and the St. Helena Parish Health Unit participated as well.

The SU/LSU staff were able to show adults and children the proper techniques of handwashing. Youths and adults were encouraged to use hot or warm water and antibacterial soap to wash their hands for twenty seconds while singing the birthday song. They were then encouraged to use a paper towel to turn off the water after proper hand washing. An ultraviolet light and Glo-Germs wash was used to detect where their hands were not washed well enough to be clean. This booth was taught by youths and one adult volunteer.
