Food Network future stars could be found in the Southwestern Region of Louisiana 4-H at this year’s annual area cookery contest. More than 100 dishes were entered in 13 different divisions from 10 parishes at the contest on Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Crowley, La. There were 12 4-H’ers representing the St. Martin Parish 4-H youth development program.
Catherine Blanchard, Cecilia High School; Blaise Leger, Teche Elementary; Hailey Hayes, Cecilia Junior High; Bailee Leger, Cecilia Junior High; Leigh Ann Hebert, Cecilia High School; Damon Lanclos, Teche Elementary; Justin Blanchard, St. Bernard; Grace Richard, At Large Club Member; Madison Latiolais, Parks; Jace Knott, St. Bernard; Paige Degeyter, Breaux Bridge High School; Seth Breaux, Breaux Bridge High School.
This contest is used as a tool to teach life skills to the 4-H’ers. Not only does participation in the contest teach youth the skill of cooking, but also it allows them to learn skills that will let them work independently in the kitchen as they get older. Also, this contest allows youth the opportunity to be creative and to practice food safety in the kitchen. Responsibility plays a huge key in the contest as the 4-H’ers learn how to follow the rules of the contest, follow a recipe and to transport the food safely to the contest site.
During the contest, 4-H members and their parents were entertained during an educational session that included healthy living-related games in a round robin format.
