On April 26, 2012 St. Mary Parish 4-H Junior Leadership Club partnered with the Bayou Teche Refuge along with additional parish organizations for the 2012 St. Mary Parish Junior Leader Day of Service.
Throughout the year St. Mary Parish 4-H Agents work promoting youth wetlands education and outreach programs to provide youth with direct experience and increase knowledge of environmental action skills, to instill in students that they can make a meaningful contribution to preserving, conserving and resorting Louisiana's Wetlands.
Assistance for the 2012 Day of Service was given by the following:
Matthew McCollister, refuge specialist of the Bayou Teche and Mandalay National Wildlife Refuges, provided youth with advice and assistance on the importance of keeping the refuge clean and how trash affects our local wildlife.
Patra Gherghich, St. Mary Parish District Conservationist for the USDA-National Resource Conservation Services provided information on the importance of Wetlands and Community Beautification.
Sophi Kilchrist, District Coordinator for the St. Mary Parish Soil and Water Conservation District provide assistance while engaging youth in an open discussion on how litter affects soil/water resources.
Catherine Siracusa, St. Mary Parish Black Bear Conflict Officer, provided hands on assistance and education on Louisiana Black Bear habitat guidelines, in the area of clean up.
Throughout the 2011-2012 school year Ms. Siracusa has been a guest speaker at every 4-H club within the parish promoting Louisiana Black Bear Awareness Education.
