Work Location: LSU AgCenter Communications, LSU Campus, Knapp Hall, Baton Rouge, LA.

Job Description: The LSU AgCenter is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and deadline-oriented manager to oversee its communications creative graphic design and publications team as assistant director of communications. The internal ideal candidate will have ten or more years’ experience in graphic design and publishing, have a strong understanding of the land-grant’s outreach mission through publications, and be able to manage a team with a high volume of work. The ability to meet long-term project goals while adapting to immediate demands is a must. The primary mission of the LSU AgCenter is to improve the lives of residents of Louisiana through an educational process that uses research-based information. The graphic design and publications team is charged with delivering this information into polished products for a variety of audiences.

The responsibilities of the assistant director will be:

  • Work closely with the director to set priorities and develop strategy for the team
  • Assist with evaluating incoming projects and assigning tasks to team members
  • Run weekly team meetings
  • Monitor workload and job flow of team
  • Help develop and enforce policies on branding and procedures, conferring with publication staff and other LSU AgCenter departments
  • Train full-time graphic design faculty/staff and student workers
  • Serve on hiring committees for LSU AgCenter and LSU College of Agriculture
  • Hold consultations with internal clients to advise on project planning
  • Perform high-level administrative activities including job archiving and tracking via database systems, in preparation for state library reporting

General graphic design and publishing requirements for this position in addition to leadership responsibilities include:

  • Assist in planning and performing duties related to communications/public relations efforts, special events, meetings, and conferences
  • Work with the Assistant Director of Communications/Marketing on LSU AgCenter marketing and advertising projects
  • Contribute content to social and traditional media advertising
  • Coordinate and ensure consistent messages, presentations and creative directions that reflect brand and marketing goals
  • Conduct trainings on visual communication techniques to LSU AgCenter faculty, staff, agents, students, and others involved with teaching, research and extension programs
  • Collaborate with the AgCenter web team and Information Technology on the development of graphics for our website and other media
  • Work as an effective team member, consultant and manager of multiple projects and maintain an efficient and timely workflow to stay on deadlines and within budgets
  • Assist with LSU AgCenter Online Store to ensure publications and inventory in store is up to date
  • Assist with archiving publications projects and working within publications database
  • Communicate appropriately with scientists and subject-matter specialists of all disciplines of agriculture, family and consumer sciences, and youth development to transform educational data into printed material and other education products or visual media for intended audiences
  • Stay current with the graphics industry software and trends to produce the best and most efficient products for our audiences

About the graphic design and publications team: The team consists of eight members who work with LSU AgCenter faculty across the state to develop numbered and non-numbered publications, educational materials, digital and marketing materials, event displays and signage. These include but are not limited to publications (printed and online), electronic newsletters, curriculums, illustrations and other visuals, plus graphic design elements and electronic documents as needed for news stories, videos, and the web. Other materials include large displays with collateral materials for educational events, trade shows and other exhibit opportunities for the LSU AgCenter.

Qualification Requirements: A bachelor's degree in graphic design, fine arts or related discipline from an accredited college or university. A master's degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred. This is a nontenured faculty position that requires a master's degree for promotion. In addition, ten or more years of graphic design experience is preferred.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
