Row Rice Field Day will take place virtually on the Row Rice Youtube channel on July 27, 2020. To find out what to expect, we interviewed Extension Agent Keith Collins and asked him what we should expect for this year’s Row Rice Field Day.
What presentations can we expect from the Row Rice Field Day videos? Collins explained that their main focus will be on the fertility, insect management, disease, and status of the rice crop during this growing season. Another topic of the event will be about soybeans. “We will get soybean updates on insect, diseases and status of soybean crop.” What other information will be provided that can help those in the agricultural community? “The Northeast Louisiana Rice Growers Association and USA Rice Federation will bring updates from Washington and Louisiana.”
When asked how this Field Day would contrast to those in past years, Collins responded about the current pandemic. “Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and restrictions associated with gatherings, we will be conducting a virtual field day.” While he remarked that farmers are usually present to experience the presentations, Collins expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to virtually share their content.
Has it been difficult to make these accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic? “We have had to buy some equipment to insure quality video presentations.” Another challenge is the distance between many of the presenters that have to record for the videos: “… we have speakers from southwest, central as well as northeast LA.” Although the lineup is scattered all over the state, Collins is optimistic that his team will rise to the challenge. “Getting the logistics worked out for each speaker will be our biggest challenge but we will get it done.”
Collins also comments on attendance: “I cannot predict this but with what we have recently seen with other row rice virtual information, I am confident we will get some viewership.”
