Walk & Bike to School Day @ Riverdale High School

Healthy Communities/ Complete Streets project for Jefferson Parish! What could I do?

Decided to do a Walk & Roll or Walk & Bike to School Activity with Riverdale HS. The event was rescheduled because the original route was not safe for students to walk. The sidewalks along Jefferson highway were surveyed by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and deemed substandard for student’s safety.

Students would be dropped off a few blocks from school & walk the remainder of the way.

Process –The students at Riverdale High School were surveyed & they made posters, I collaborated with the Assistant Principal, procured permits & worked w/Jefferson Parish Police Department to secure JP police officers to monitor the route.

Outcomes – Now we have students interested in Wellness council; Cemented relationships with the School Administration and Bike Easy, with a potential of including parents and Community partners in next year’s event. This project has fulfilled my initial goal for Healthy Communities and Complete Streets to begin making changes in the health, walk-ability, bike ability and complete streets policy within the 70121 zip code.

We need to realize PSE’s – Policy, Systems & Environmental changes in Jefferson Parish can benefit all residents and presented the information to Council woman Jennifer Van Vrancken in support of a Complete Streets Policy for the parish.

Now activating calls to council members from local residents in support of the Complete Streets Policy.
