Waddle like a penguinjpgThe Ouachita LSU AgCenter was recently awarded $5,675 of grant funding from a Healthy Communities Project Mini Grant to address the nutrition and physical activity environments in the parish through a systemic, community-driven approach to reducing obesity. The funds will be used towards the Growing Healthy Schools project that is aiming to positively impact children’s health behaviors while also providing support for teachers to make healthful choices. J.S. Clark Magnet School in Ouachita Parish has been identified as Healthy Communities partner school for the 2021-2022 school year.

Based on needs assessments, input from school representatives, and feedback from the Ouachita Healthy Communities Coalition members, funding was sought to implement policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes at J.S. Clark Magnet with the goal of increasing physical activity and supporting healthy choices. Funding has been approved for PSE changes to support the following objectives of the project:

  • Installation of sensory pathways to promote movement and help students develop motor skills
  • Addition of a menu board to encourage healthy eating in the school cafeteria
  • Installation of signage at the school walking track to create a “Silly Walking Track” and prompt physical activity
  • Addition of giant board games that require movement to play in order to allow for active recess time even on bad weather days when the outdoor playgrounds are not accessible
  • Addition of playground enhancements to promote physical activity
  • Provision of needed equipment to support physical education classes and active recess play

The LSU AgCenter will also be collaborating with J.S. Clark Magnet School to provide resources, direct education, and social marketing. It is our hope that this project will encourage the students and staff to adopt healthy lifestyles that are physically active.
