LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research Station and Rapides Parish Extension Office

The intern would work with an LSU AgCenter Central Region horticulture agent and the state fruit and nut specialist. The intern will assist with horticulture calls and site visits. Opportunities to work on fruit research and extension projects will also be available.

Qualifications

Ideally someone with a horticulture background or pursuing a horticulture degree. A biology or a plant science background may be applicable as well.

Primary Tasks, Duties, and/or Responsibilities

  • Assisting with harvesting and maintenance of blackberries at the Dean Lee Research Station Teaching Garden
  • Troubleshooting and researching solutions based on horticulture calls to the Rapides parish extension office and potentially fruit calls from across the state.
  • Being available for horticulture site visits in Rapides parish.
  • Writing of at least one gardening article for publication in Central Louisiana magazine.

Contingent on potential grant funding but could include

  • Assisting in planning and installation of raspberry and raspberry hybrids research demonstration planting.
  • Assisting in creation of blackberry resources for a StoryWalk installation in the Dean Lee Research Station Teaching Garden
  • Funding status of grants will be known by the end of January or early February 2024.

Success Measure or End of Project Deliverables

At least one popular press article for publication but ideally two or three.

Contingent on potential grant funding but creation of blackberry StoryWalk materials and installation of a raspberry research planting.
