Consider Cleanup Buckets Service Project during Flood Disasters

Some organizations and churches may wish to work together to assist those whose homes have flooded and need cleaning supplies. The American Red Cross in Repairing Your Flooded Home publication suggests the following cleanup supply list for cleaning up a flooded home.

  • Brooms, mops, brushes, sponges
  • Buckets, hose
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rags
  • Cleaner
  • Disinfectants
  • Lubricating oil
  • Trash bags
  • Hair dryer

The United Methodist Church Committee on Relief suggests volunteers and groups preparing flood buckets as service projects include the following materials:

  • 5-gallon bucket with re-sealable lid
  • Bleach (do not include if shipping flood bucket)
  • Souring pads
  • Scrub brush
  • Cleaning towels (disposable)
  • Sponges
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Household cleaner
  • Disinfectant dish soap
  • Clothes pins
  • Clothes line
  • Dust masks
  • Latex gloves
  • Work gloves
  • Roll of large heavy-duty trash bags
  • Insect repellant spray
  • Air freshener
  • Hand Sanitizer

Remember, all bottles should be plastic and bucket contents should be new items. In some cases it may be best to remove cellophane or cardstock/cardboard packaging. Place items inside bucket and seal the lid. Again, do not include bleach if shipping.
