Three Bin Compost System

A 3 bin composting system is an excellent way to organize your composting operation. Each bin separates a different stage of the composting process with fresh organic material going into one bin, and finished compost can be moved from another.

The system can be used for hot or cold composting depending on individual preference and need.

Bin #1

1. Add compostable material to bin #1.
2. Turn the pile weekly full.
3. Transfer all contents to bin #2.
4. Repeat steps 1 -3.

Bin #2

5. Leave the material in bin #2 until the internal temperature reaches 131° F for at least three consecutive days.

Bin #3

6. Transfer contents to bin #3. Move large pieces back to bin #1.

7. Compost will finish and cure in bin #3. Use the compost in your landscape and gardens.

Pros

  • High temperatures in pile destroy disease pathogens and weed seeds.
  • Fast time to finished compost.

Cons

  • Labor Intensive.

Building Materials

  • Numerous materials may be used. Durable materials like brick or treated wood preferred to last multiple years.

Size

  • Each bin minimum size 3' wide x 3' deep x 3' tall. Build larger to meet needs.
